Description: As technology evolves, hardware device unit costs and cloud processing capacity become cheaper and more power-efficient. The cost of providing and maintaining connectivity between "internet of things" devices such as sensors and actuators and the cloud increasingly dominate the economics and technical feasibility of many applications. This situation particularly applies to battery-powered applications with low data volume and wide-area radio coverage requirements.

Existing wide-area connectivity solutions based on cellular or mesh technologies often fail to meet the needs of current and emerging applications in terms of cost, spectral efficiency or energy consumption. As a result emerging wireless approaches to providing device connectivity, termed Low Power Wide Area Networks or LPWAN, are gaining traction. LPWAN networks become a critical enabler – the missing piece – to many emerging IoT applications, and may disrupt business models in some existing applications.

When: 12 midday AEST (Sydney) on Tuesday 13 Dec 2016. The presentation will last 30 minutes followed by question time.

Cost: This presentation is free to members of Engineers Australia (EA), the Australian Computer Society (ACS), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and IEEE. Just provide your membership number during registration for the event. The cost for non-members is $30.

About the presenter: Prior to founding Airlora Communications, Spangaro was Entrepreneur in Residence at CSIRO with the flagship CSIRO innovation program ‘ON’ and was founding Managing Director (Australia) of Silicon Valley-based machine-learning acceleration start-up Wave Computing. Spangaro also lectures in Digital Systems Design at RMIT University and has co-supervised several PhD students working on advanced logic systems. He has extensive research and development experience in Australia and Silicon Valley developing technologies for organisations such as Cisco, Ericsson, NEC, Philips, LSI Logic, Zilog, Agilent, Boeing and Telstra. His areas of technical expertise include semiconductor engineering and low-power multicore processor design. Spangaro’s degrees in Communications Engineering and MBA are both from RMIT University.
